Here is a list of possible "knock-out" factors:
- You do not fit the requirements.
- You have less experience than they want
- You have more experience than they want.
- You did not read the job description carefully and lack something they want.
- Recruiters get paid to find the ideal fit not just a fit. Remember, you are always in competition with other job seekers.
- Your resume does not represent you in the best light. Recruiters send me resumes with the hope that the candidate will let me help them. If the job seeker ignores my offer to help the Recruiter is not going to submit their sub-par resume. It is too easy to find another one that looks better.
- Sometimes the company does not tell the Recruiter exactly what they want or need.
- Your resume does not align with this job. Maybe you received an interview for another job but you neglected to tweak your resume for this job.
- Is your resume or cover letter "over-the-top"? Recruiters get turned off by superlatives whether you wrote them or someone else wrote them. You need to convey your accomplishments that are clear and appealing and easy to access.
- You are not a cultural fit. I have over 25 years of experience just in recruiting and resume writing. I served during Vietnam. I would not be a cultural fit in an organization full of 25 to 35 year olds.
- Your profile on LinkedIn does not align with your resume. Your profile should not be an exact duplicate of your resume but should be in alignment with jobs and dates and duties.
