I met with a group of job seekers last night. I presented my resume strategies from the viewpoint of 20 years of recruiting and delivering 1,000 resumes in the last 36 months for all experience levels from the C-Level to New Grads. Some of the participants gave me their resumes to review. They were generic and banal. They had been instructed that this was the way a resume should look.

I guess if you want to be put in the "maybe" or "reject" pile that is the way to go. Yes, the grammar was correct, the font was fine, the borders were benign and the punctuation was perfect...... just like a million others. If this is what is being taught it is no wonder job seekers are having such a hard time.My way is not the only way (well....maybe). There has to be an effort to engage the reader or you will be rejected. This morning I received this response from a resume I delivered yesterday:Hi Gary! Thanks for ALL the work you did to strengthen my resume and consolidate as much as possible (applause, applause!). I've gone through it and - per your request - suggested some changes shown in blue ink.Thank you so much!Do you feel this way about your resume? If not let's talk.
