I was recently reminded of the importance of phone interview preparation when 3 clients mentioned that there interviews had not gone well. They had not taken sufficient time to really get themselves ready. They thought they could just "wing it". Another strategy for phone interviewing is to record yourself. How do you come across on the phone? Do you sound energetic or tired? Do you come across as interested or discouraged?
Below are my phone interview preparation tips:Before the call:
Copy of your resume in hand.
Professionally answer the phone.
No music, TV in background.
Do not put the caller on hold for any reason.
Their goal:
This is an interview-they want to know if you are a fit both technically and personally.
They are looking for red flags.
They may bring up something negative to get your reaction.
You are trying to get them to see you-not give you a job-yet
Listen to the question-make sure you understand the question-answer appropriately.
You need to connect with the interviewer.
You need to be prepared.
They may ask Tech questions.
They may ask Traditional questions.
They may ask Behavioral questions.
Keep the phone near your mouth so you sound interested and not distant.
